The Rotary Club of Penal has proudly supported the sport of Goalball since 2023, championing inclusion and opportunity for visually impaired athletes.
On November 29th, a significant collaborative effort brought the sport of Goalball to Tobago for the first time. The initiative, led by the Rotary Club of Penal, was executed in partnership with the Trinidad and Tobago Blind Welfare Association, the Tobago Library Services Visually Impaired Unit, and the Division of Health, Wellness and Social Protection. The primary goal is to establish a Goalball club in Tobago. This project perfectly embodies Rotary's core values, specifically Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), and emphasizes the power of organizational collaboration for maximum community impact.
Jason Gopie, President of the Rotary Club of Penal, underscored the importance of this partnership and articulated the club's ambitious vision to see a Trinidad and Tobago Goalball team qualify for the Paralympic Games. The event was warmly welcomed by all stakeholders. Following the introductory demonstration, a small tournament was held. Four teams, comprising players from the Super Sonic Strikers and the Rolling Thunder Goalball Club, were formed and notably led by two female athletes. The event benefited from the expertise of coach Francis Hynes and commentary was provided by Angelo Chanh Kin Kee, President of the Goalball club south Trinidad. The event was concluded by all participating teams receiving medals as encouragement to continue their involvement in the sport.
